Project Americas: The Scrapped Two-Continent GTA VI That Almost Was

Before Vice City, before Leonida, there was a bigger dream: a GTA spanning two continents. Rockstar just confirmed it was real — and explained why it died.

Before Vice City, before Leonida, there was a bigger dream. Filed as confirmed — on the record in Bloomberg’s “The Making of Grand Theft Auto VI” (14 Oct 2026), a daylong interview with Rockstar’s senior staff at Rockstar North, Edinburgh; the first time Rockstar has openly discussed the game’s development.

The file, in brief

Why it died

Not one single crisis — scale. Two continent-spanning ambitions couldn’t run in the same company at the same time.

Nelson says the early years weren’t wasted: things the team built during the Americas period “would pay off” when the studio returned to GTA 6. Note what he did not say: what survived. Rockstar hasn’t detailed anything that carried over from the Americas vision into the final game.

The scope eventually narrowed to Miami-inspired Vice City and the surrounding state of Leonida — the game launching 19 November 2026.

What we don’t know (and won’t guess)

Why it matters for the case file

This is the honest answer to the 13-year wait between GTA V and GTA VI: the sequel’s development didn’t begin in earnest until after RDR2’s 2018 release, because the original vision was shelved to finish the western first.

It reframes the map we are getting. Leonida isn’t a small idea — it’s the focused version of a two-continent vision Rockstar decided it couldn’t build alongside RDR2. See the “Extended Look” breakdown for what that focus produced.

And it comes with a promise: head of development Phil Hooker says the studio does not expect another eight-year gap before the next game. The Americas detour was a one-time cost of ambition.

Bottom line

Filed as confirmed, not rumor: GTA VI was once a two-continent game called Project Americas. Red Dead Redemption 2 ate the schedule. What survived is Vice City and Leonida — and Rockstar says the next one comes faster.
